City gets sidewalk upgrade in CAUD Burkesville Street project

2018-07-30 - 800 Block of Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.

A stretch of sidewalk originally poured during the administration of Mayor Coy Downey was totally replaced from from this point to about halfway to Bomar Heights at no cost to the city. The old sidewalk had to be broken up during construction of the Burkesville Street Phase of Columbia/Adair County Utility District's Downtown Project, and CAUD is bearing the cost for this benefit, Mayor Curtis Hardwick said. When the project was first designed it was thought that sidewalks from Fortune & Burkesville to Burkesville and Lancaster, on one side or the other, would be replaced, but change orders to save the utility construction costs on the new waterlines utilized a series of directional bores to avoid sidewalk destruction - meant all new sidewalks paid for by the utilities did not materialize. But in the reconstruction it was discovered that the original sidewalks poured by Mayor Downey's administration were, in fact, four-feet wide. Overgrowth had made the appear half that until the soil and turf was removed. - EW
