Flowers of Kentucky: Soybeans in bloom

2018-06-30 - Along an Adair County Byway - Kentucky - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
We snapped this photo across a field of Adair County Soybeans, taking a picture of a teensy-tiny little blossom almost as elusive as the mythical fern flower. For sure, those who are not as expert as we are now (yeah, right) might not have known there is such a thing. We've tried to read the brochures - though real farmers do not listen to our new genius. That's the problem around here: Nobody will listen to freshly minted 'experts.' You can see flowers in this proof of concept picture. As the picture was being processed, we also noticed the dried tendrils, and then looked into the edible parts of the miracle plant, which, now, we believe, is the most valuable row crop in the county. Didn't find a "tendril soup" recipe in a cursory search, nor have we discovered a practical use for dried soybean tendrils. Surely the original Americans had a nifty use for them. And, in fossicking around for a photo of bright white & green field of soybean flowers, we found not one. Hopefully, before the flowers on this crop are gone someone will share a detailed one, using the close-up setting, and tell us more about soybeans. (Did find soy chips as a snack product; never seen it on a restaurant menu around here, though) - Ed Waggener
