Great Institution of Learning: Egypt School, Adair County, KY

2018-03-31 - Seen from Egypt Christian Church, Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.

Few classrooms in the world have produced more first rate scholars and successes than Egypt School, still shining bright in the evening sun as if basking in pride in its scholars who attended the eight grades there. As county schools were consolidated in the 1950's kids from here and Egypt's sister school at Jericho stood out, and came to be known as "Green River Kids" - teachers in town expected them to stand out, and they did. Back in the the schools' day, there was no broadband, no Chromebooks or iPads, no cell phones, no cafeteria, and most of the students walked to school, and were expected to take care of custodial duties themselves. There were of course, separate on-campus hygiene centers and installations for drawing clean, potable water. HVAC was provided by renewable energy sources, and people-powered, mortuary-provided cooling systems. Pining for the old days ignores the wondrous stories which would have been archived today had modern spying techniques been in place when the school was alive with students. What a book that would have made! - EW/LW
