Observations: A lot going on on Greensburg Street

2017-06-08 - 200 Block, Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, Columbiamagazine.com(c) .
There's a lot going on in this picture. Most obvious is that the reconstruction of the intersection at Campbellsville Street & Merchant/Reed Street will affect all parts of town, including Greensburg Street - so in the interim between the start of the Traffic Signal Rebuild on Monday morning, June 12, 2017, everyone, especially the natives, will have to learn their own shortcuts. The work set to continue through August 1. Secondly the Columbia Baptist Church Vacation Bible School is underway. Thirdly The sight of the beautiful old brick home is a reminder of a hope that this place matters, and that someone will see the value in its restoration. And The sight of the sidewalk: For too long, the City of Columbia has neglected sidewalks for decades. But now, finally, the meticulous work of the City Council's Sidewalk Advisory Committee, there is great hope that a safe sidewalk will finally be built from the Square all the way to the Adair County High School campus - although a deserved moratorium on Columbia street repaving to concentrate on sidewalks for a year or two won't happen, there is hope that, even as early as this summer, a four-tenths of a mile connector from the Joe Flowers corner on Greensburg Street can be constructed. Mary Ann Loy estimates that the cost would be in the neighborhood of $40-50,000, a pittance in the scope of street projects, other economic development costs, and other Parks & Recreation project costs. - EW
