Superintendent Alan Reed has announced that he will not be attending tonight's special called meeting of the Adair County Board of Education, but the approach of his retirement effective December 31, 2016 is casting a long shadow not only over the future of education in Adair County, but also over the future of economic development here as well. The direction the board, with its new composition in January, will take, is very much on the minds of community leaders at this time. Some answers may come tonight, with the consideration of an interim superintendent for four days between Superintendent Reed's resignation and the seating of two new Board of Education members on January 4, 2016. "I don't want even a hint of any conflict of interest or involvement in the selection of my successor or the interim superintendent," he said. He has also notified the board that he will not be acting as secretary tonight. "I do encourage the community to attend tonight's meetings and continue to attend them," he said. Even though he will not be present, his five years of innovation and transformation will be looming in the board room tonight, and for many years to come. - ED WAGGENER.
