Mystery connection? Familiar Adair County byway

2016-09-25 - Plum Point Hill, Green River Lake, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Early autumn is one of this familiar Adair County byways perfect times. It's Plum Point Hill, toward Egypt, toward the Plum Point Baptist Church. There were just a few rustling leaves, and a lot of birds and squirrels slowing traffic. Up ahead, at the top of the hill, there were wiley turkeys who took to the woods at the approach of a car. The photo, for some reason, put me in mind of this prayer and the man who personified it - he rarely made a speech in this region without quoting it by heart. The mystery is: Who was that statesman? And what expected turn of events make his memory more significant? An Old Irish Blessing: "May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand." If you know, and have memories, send them using the Comments link under this photo. And, oh yes, can anyone explain why the Old Irish would see it a blessing if the road rises to meet you. One would picture that as all uphill, not much of a blessing; but it sounds good; maybe poets get away with that. - EW.
