Inspiring ancient oak tree at fairgrounds

2016-09-04 - Old Adair County Fairground, 413 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c).
Looking up into this huge oak tree, there's a vague memory of it's role in the great baseball games played here, when it was the home field for the semi-pro Garlin & Gradyville clubs - maybe others. The question comes to mind about whether the High School teams used the field or not for their games - I think ACHS did. The question is: Wasn't it automatically a home run when the ball was batted into the trees in the Grove? Today, every building, every venue gets a name, first for an individual, and then, when it can be commercialized, naming rights are sold to corporations. If this field were commemorated thusly, who would it be called. Cy Barger Field would come to mind. Or it might be named for Berley Young, Hubert Edwards, or Stanley Downey, or even E.A. Diddle. Just a thought, looking toward the heavens through that tree. - EW
