Birds of Kentucky: Canada Geese a-plenty

2016-08-31 - Pelham Branch Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, CM photo (c).
Driving north on Dillon Street which magically morphs into Pelham Branch Road at the City limits, there's one of the most delightful scenes in Kentucky on the west side of the road: The pond which seems to always have bird visitors. It seems Canada Geese are making a major run to be the National Bird of Adair County. More and more are finding living is good here, and are becoming year-round residents, growing fat, maybe a bit lazy, forgetting their duty to fascinate us with annual fly-overs in spring and fall. If it's not the same flock showing up here, at the Adair County School District Campus, at The Pines at Lindsey Wilson golf course, Columbia/Adair County High School, and at Miss Vicky's Pampered Wildgoose Ranch - then the census is already incredible. Some expert will have to weigh in on whether this is, on balance, a good phenomenon - and if any action needs to be taken. - Ew
