CJE Mike Stephens certifies receipt, requests Clerk to validate

2016-01-21 - Ste. 3, Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
After receiving the 1, 965 signatures petitioning for a Wet-Dry Vote in Adair County from Shannon Sexton and Janie Potts of PAC, County Clerk Lisa Greer notified CJE Michael Lee Stephens, left, and delivered the papers to him for his examination. The CJE had the option of validating the signatures in his office or requesting the clerk to do so; he chose the latter. Clerk Greer said that she will start immediately on the validation and will complete the task as soon as her staff can do so. She said that she will work until 1,039 signatures are validated, then certify them to the CJE, who, in turn will have five days to accept the certification and order an election, which must be no less than 60 days, no more than 90 days, from the day of certification. The election cannot be with 30 days of the May 17, 2016 primary election. This will mean that if the petition is certified, the election will have to be within the time frame of March 21 and April 17, 2016, Clerk Greer said. During the validation and certification process, Shannon Sexton said that the PAC headquarters at 830 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY, will be closed. After that, she said, PAC will continue to be there to answer questions and to work for Yes votes for the petition. - CM. Paired photo, see also: PAC submits 1,965Wet-Dry Petition signatures to Co.
