Russell Co. Courthouse: In counting room before any votes posted

2016-01-20 - 202 Monument Square, Jamestown, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Russell County Sheriff Clete McAninch, member of the Board of Elections, talked with the WAVE 92.7 FM & the BIG DAWG, 99.9 FM newsman Larry Smith before the first votes were announced from the countywide Wet-Dry election, Tue 19 Jan 2017. the consensus around the table was that the vote would be close. When the evening was over, they were right, it was 3833 YES (for the county to be Wet) and 3423 NO, for a 410 vote margin. Close, but clearly decisive, and historic, as an eight decades old era of Prohibition came to an end. Monument Circle in Jamestown was filled with cars as the 45 minute count, which began at 6pmCT, with the posting of absentees, which gave a clear margin to the YES/Wet vote. Other members of the Board of Elections, not in this photo, are Sue Brockman, County Clerk; Daryl Robertson (D) and Victor Hill (R). - EW
