Birds of KY: Committee of black vultures convenes at Knifley 2016-01-06 - At the Crossroads, KY 551 & KY 76 (Knifley Road & Elkhorn Road, Knifley, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener . According to Charles Giles of Knifley, the black vultures seen in this photo are only a small part of the number which ordinarily show up here on the SE corner of the intersection, and in trees on the NE corner. The birds are a protected species, so, for now they are a fact of life, though there's little love for their ways in this part of Adair County. Giles said that the birds have been roosting in the trees for about four or five years and are year round residents. About the only thing which will dislodge them from their roosts is the louds noises of mufflers. Mr. Giles said they are impatient scavengers, at times hastening the deaths of small animals, and that one had killed a newborn calf in the area. - EW Permalink | Comments?
