Columbia City Council meeting - Let there be light

2016-01-05 - City Hall, 116 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Vicky Browning Pike, front, appeared before the Columbia City Council Mon 4 Jan 2015 to ask the city to take the lead for more lighting in the fast growing area. She was accompanied by Cynthia Rowe, center, and Kenneth Bennett, not in photo. Council Member Charles Grimsley, above, and Council Member Linda Waggener, were early and strong supporters for her effort, as was Mayor Curtis Hardwick. Miss Vicky also proposed lights atop the four poles at the corners of the Edmonton Road & Burkesville Road intersection and for lighting at the "other" entrance to Holladay Place on Patricia Trail, at the Duo-County/Sleep Inn/Goodwill entrance. As the segment of the meeting progressed and it received the blessings of all the council, Council Member Mark Harris said that he hopes one day lighting will be extended along Martin Luther King Boulevard to connect with City Street lighting in Town. Possible problems are jurisdictional: The areas under discussion are in different jurisdictions and service areas: Part is in the City and part in Adair County and part is the responsibility of the Commonwealth. Both Kentucky Utilities and Taylor County RECC provide power to the area and each has different rate structures for street lights. Pike, who successfully advocated for interchange lighting at Exit 46 near Columbia Walmart, seemed well pleased with the cooperative approach to the getting the job done. Mayor Hardwick said he would immediately start researching how to get the projects going. Pike said she would be pleased with a step at a time, just so it is completed before it is forgotten.
