Diabetes awareness day proclaimed in Adair 2015-11-13 - Ste 1, Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo from Destiny Greet. Adair County Judge Executive Michael Stephens met with Destiny Greer, diabetes educator at the Adair Health Department to make the day official. Proclamation -- Whereas: more than 29.1 million Americans – including over 359,000 in Kentucky have diabetes, a serious disease that has no cure: and Whereas diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States: and Whereas an estimated 21 million have been diagnosed and another 86 million people are estimated to have pre-diabetes, a condition that puts people at increased risk for diabetes, and unfortunately, approx. 8.1 million people are unaware that they have the disease: and Whereas it is estimated more than 230,000 Americans each year will die from its complications, and people whose diabetes goes un-diagnosed and untreated are subject to any of its life-threatening complications; such as blindness, heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, and leg or foot amputations; and Whereas an increase in community awareness of risk factors and symptoms related to diabetes can improve the likelihood that people with diabetes will get the attention they need before developing the disease and its devastating Now, Therefore, I, Michael Lee Stephens, Judge Executive of Adair County, do hereby proclaim Saturday, November 14, 2015 as Diabetes Awareness Day in Adair County, Kentucky, and urge all citizens to help fight this disease and its life- threatening complications by increasing awareness of the risk factors for diabetes, making healthy lifestyle choices, and by providing care and treatment for those suffering for diabetes.
