Is it or is it not safe to cross? Is it in fact a crosswalk?

2015-08-30 - Crosswalk Campbellsville Street at the Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Downtown Columbia is a natural walking campus and should be part of what makes Columbia one of the most walkable cities in America. The .2 mile around the sidewalks - for one mile with five laps - offers a lot of what many pedestrians and walk-for-health want: There are benches and seats along the way, there are, through the week, places to get a drink of of water, and public restrooms are readily assessible. And food is at hand. There are some tripping hazards. The biggest, easiest to fix improvement is lack of paint, lack of adequately marked crosswalk. At least one of Columbia's neighbors has its own municipal striping machine and skilled operator(s). It's remarkable what a difference that one factor does to improve it's "Walkable Cities" score. Adequately marked crosswalks, and more of them, would do so much to get people out, safely utilizing a very enjoyable, very low cost health maintenance program - just walking five + miles, making 10,000 steps a day, at the expense of only shoe leather. - EW
