Scenic Adair County: Geraniums at or near peak

2015-08-28 - Fountain Plaza, Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
This morning at 6:17amCT, one of the most compelling sights were the Adair County Garden Club's red geraniums by the fountain. Red seemed to dominate the area, and I thought of Dad, who used to indulge my need for a new Schwinn by telling me we'd go get one, and would point out that I could get either color I wanted, "Red is the prettiest color," he said. "unless you want maroon." It was his favorite color. I only mentioned a couple of times that I preferred Chelf blue. But he dispatched that notion quickly. And when Mr. Lipski took the order at Louisville Cycle, and the time came to pick the color, he'd say, authoritatively, "Red," unless it were time for Maroon. But that's a digression. There was another bit of not so trivial trivia, along the way: The "Yield" sign now has atop it a rectangular "One way," addition. Don't know who is responsible, but I bet it made Charles Grimsley smile. There should be a gambling game, with proceeds augmenting those from to the World's Greatest Sporting event - The Wacky Qwacky Duck race, coming up Labor Day, September 7, 2015 - on days and hours between traffic pileups because a wayward semi turned left at the Greensburg Street entrance to the Square, couldn't make the turn at Campbellsville, and created two hours of the most pleasurable fussing and huffing about why something had to be done, and rants about "those idiots." Could be, with something sensible like the "One way sign," we'll have to stage a downtown traffic jam or lose that tradition forever. Thinking about that loss of tradition made lose me sad, and I forgot I came to the Square to get in five laps around the sidewalks - 1 mile almost exactly, before breakfast. - EW
