Paul McEachern: Pre-emptive strike against new taxes

2015-07-15 - Adair Annex Basement, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, CM photo.
Activist Paul McEachern, foreground, was one of three given three minutes by CJE Mike Stephens to address the court in the "Public Comments" segment of the Tues 14 Jul 2015 regular session of Adair Fiscal Court. McEachern, along with Philip Nafziger, and Tom Frazier announced their oppostion to any insurance franchise fee which might - "certain" Mr. Frazier said - be enacted by the court. Both Judge Stephens and Second District Magistrate Sammy Baker had commented, in an earlier meeting, that Adair County would have to find new revenue streams or face reductions in services. Judge Stephens said that the fee would be paid by the insurance companies, who, in turn have the option to pass it on to policyholders. McEachern, Nafziger, and Frazier argued that the insurance levy would end up being paid for by county residents. When asked what services they might cut, they suggested the Green River Animal Shelter, saying it wasn't the taxpayers responsibility to save kittens. Tom Frazier told the court that the group would be gathering signatures around the county in opposition to any new tax and that he would be back before the court in the future. A similar insurance ordinance as proposed by CJE Stephens is paid by residents of Columbia.
