Bounty from Matilda's Garden

2015-07-12 - Shelby County, KY - Photo photo by Mema, Linda Waggener.
Matilda shared a perfectly ripe tomato for an in-the-garden (doesn't get any fresher than that) basil wrapped tomato salad. It was part of a 45-minute salad-and-a-show theatre she hosted while we saw, in all-too short a time, the remarkable transitions she's going through following a recent fourth birthday. We learned that she's already "Matilda," but she graciously allows us to call her "Tillie." As the garden docent, she showed us where the sedum was blooming, where the marigolds where, the day- and tall tiger- lillies and hostas grew, and where the zinnia stood guard. As any gardener worries, she knew the tall stalks of corn might have to be shared with her squirrels, and how, over time, more of the lush carpet of bluegrass might be giving way to more raised bed gardens and a ground cover of moss, just as soft as grass, but more tickly, would take possession of a bit of running space in her princess' lawn and garden. - Granddad & Mema, Linda & Ed Waggener
