Scenic Adair Co., KY: Flags flying - a scene from last week

2015-07-05 - Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener. The shallow pools of water faintly reflect Adair County's most famous icon, the Historic Adair County Courthouse on Friday, July 3, 2015 in the evening. Adair County Fair Banners were hung on lamp posts around the Square. A once grand downtown residence is vine draped, in much the same pattern as we've noticed on old farm buildings in many of the "Bottoms" in Cumberland County - not sure if Adair has followed that identification in any location; anybody know of a "Bottoms" here, formally. I can remember "Demaree's Bottoms" on Sulphur Creek, but none other - and those Cumberland County Bottoms are usually accompanied by a "Landing." But the most significant thing we noticed was a memory of the contribution of Mayor Pat Bell, who almost singlehandedly moved the city to rebuild the freestone masonry wall in front of the Dr. Nathan Gaither house. It's taken for granted now. Mayor Bell now lives in Lexington, but this and other very positive contributions to the community should always be remembered. And of course, remembering his years in office, one can't forget that in a way, he preserved another Adair County icon - at least in beautiful art, with his painting of the now gone and deeply lamented Garnett House, which stood at Greensburg & North High Street. - Ed & Linda
