Adair County Middle Schools enjoy Jack Tales in oral tradition

2015-02-10 - Adair County Middle School, 322 Gen. John Adair Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo submitted by Shamarie Claiborne, Adair Co. School District .

Mrs. Octavia Sexton of Orlando, KY, engaged Mrs. Campbell's 8th grade art students in storytelling. Mrs. Sexton specializes in the oral traditions of Appalachia and has traveled around the US doing workshops, performances and educational residencies. Adair County Middle School 8th grade students enjoyed many "Jack Tales" and stories passed down to her through generations. Students performed pantomimes, told their own stories and learned presentation skills. This artist residency was funded by an award received from VSA Kentucky, a non-profit organization that provides opportunities in the arts for children and adults with disabilities.
