Dr. Joseph Schickel Veterans Memorial Park

2015-01-04 - 214 Upper River Street, Burkesville, KY - Photo Ed Waggener.
The monument to Dr. Joseph Schickel stands at the entrance to the park named in his honor, the Dr. Joseph Schickel Veterans Memorial Park. What a legacy it is, to him. It's hard to imagine another community park which works so well. It's in walking distance of practically every resident of the City of Burkesville and some 17 restaurants, the nursing home, the Senior Citizens Center, public schools and library, and yet it offers ample parking for the huge crowds which attend annual celebrations there. The Spirit of Cumberland County is evident in the other legacies within. On the left of the monument is the Paul and Phyllis Smith Outdoor Theatre. On the grounds, the original Morgan School House is a legacy to the late Chattin Chowning. There may be others within the park as well. The park is a big reason why Burkesville is no longer "Kentucky's Best Kept Secret." The word is out. It's a good "lab town" for other communities to visit and see how local goals are met with local solutions, and not just in parks. (Charities, too.) - EW
