Birds of KY: Bald Eagle often seen now near bypass/PBR

2014-11-02 - Intersection, Pelham Branch Road & Adair Veterans Memorial Bypass, Columbia, KY - Photo by Justin Karnes.
Justin Karnes captured this American bald Eagle regularly seen the last few days around the intersection of Pelham Branch Road and the bypass intersection. It's seems to have an affinity for Anthony & Carolyn Hale's property, he said, but this photo was taken by Pelham Branch Road just north of it change of name from Dillon Street to Pelham Branch at the city limits, according to Rodney Karnes, who submitted the photo and gave the information for this story. It's the first Birds of Kentucky has had a photograph of one of the majestic birds of prey which has been sighted inside the city. Rodney Karnes said that he's seen the Eagle with a young raccoon on the roadway, and thinks the prey was freshly killed by a vehicle. So far, we haven't had reports of anyone seeing an attack from the air by an eagle. It is commonplace to see hawks along the bypass swoop down catch, and eat rabbits and other small animals atop the highway's rock cuts and banks.
