Scenic Adair County, KY: The gorgeous gold of Pawpaws now

2014-10-26 - Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo (c) ColumbiaMagazine.com.
If for no other reason than their ornamental value, Pawpaw (or paw paw or paw-paw or Kentucky Banana) trees should be propagated on the lawns of Columbia, KY. During the summer, the deep almost black green leaves are the prettiest in the landscape where they appear. Many love the taste of the custardy fruit; for others - even those who love the trees and their foliage - their cloyingly sweet taste is disagreeable. Our father, E.P. Waggener, liked them better even than apples and peaches - maybe not as well as "mushmelons," as many here used to call cantaloupe; that was his favorite; I shared his love of cantaloupe, especially his "invention," a halved cantaloupe filled with vanilla ice cream, but I didn't share his fondness for pawpaws. He almost believed that spitting the seeds led to more pawpaw trees. But the Wikipedia entry on Asimina tribola suggests propagation by "Desirable kinds (cultivars) of pawpaw are propagated by chip budding or whip grafting," or using container grown pawpaws for transplanting. There is actually some interest in cultivation of the trees; Dr. Ben Arnold is more of a believer than my dad was. Incidentally, the trees contain natural pesticides. And, incidentally, the lovely sight at the Conn residence is best enjoyed walking the Greensburg Street sidewalks.
