Birds of KY: Red-tailed Hawk, having supper

2014-09-17 - E Fortune Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. He was there, not 50 feet from our supper table enjoying a meal - a worrisome sight for us. There's a small kitten wandering our neighborhood we're worrying about now, and we hoped it hadn't become the raptor's meal. It was the first time we'd ever seen a red-tailed hawk (hope our ID is correct; see All About Birds/Red-tailed Hawk) this close. It seemed absolutely fearless while eating. Raps on the window pane barely got its attention. It seemed to take no notice at all when we opened the door for a clearer photo - in fact, it remained after 51 frames were slowly taken. We were relieved when the little kitten showed up, scampering by a low holly in the landscape at the front of the house, and guessed that the hawk's entree was a young rabbit - they're quite plentiful and healthy this season. We pondered whether the hawk might be useful for groundhog patrol; and whether, as owls seem wont to do, the hawk and his ilk might attack humans. - Ed Waggener
