Critters of Cool Springs Creek: Soft shelled turtle

2014-06-19 - Cool Springs Creek, Gradyville, KY - Photo by Guy Babin. Found on the Cool Springs Creek crossing at the entrance to our place yesterday evening. She is the smooth variety about 12" long and was scooping out a place on the side of the road with her hind legs presumably to lay eggs. This morning on our walk all we could find was a vacant shallow hard scratch depression. She likely found better nesting digs closer to the creek. I was hoping she'd stick out her long neck to its entirety... but her smug expression told me to get lost. A lady needs her privacy after all. - Guy Babin Gradyville
