Favorite old photo: Greyhound stop Columbia, 1968

2014-03-27 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Jimmy Lowe Cravens. Larry Smith, Operations Manager, Shoreline Communications found this photo of the Greyhound Bus which used to come to Columbia on at daily basis, in 1968. The bus station was in the Hotel Miller at the time. Hack Rowe was the stationmaster. The Coca-Coca Sign on the corner says "HOTEL B RBER SHOP," at the time operated by Johnny and Gilliam Fudge. The picture from Larry Smith arrived at the time of a coincidence. A Lindsey parent who lives in Rochester, NY, called yesterday wanting to know about public transportation from Lexington, Louisville, Nashville or Cincinnati to Columbia. Sadly, I had to tell him that there isn't any that I know of, unless the college offers a shuttle service during graduations. It was a sad commentary on the course of progress. There's a lot to be read from the other changes on the square today from what's seen in the photo. Maybe someone will let us know. Many alive today remember the scene, and remember the photographer, one of South Central Kentucky's great journalists, Jimmy Lowe Cravens, founder of Campbellsville's Central Kentucky News Journal, which served Taylor, Adair, and Green Counties so well. Thanks to Larry Smith, the WAVE 92.7 and The Big Dawg, 99.9 FM, for sharing this picture from his vast collection. - Ed Waggener
