Old Knifley: The L.R. Chelf post office 2014-02-25 - ACPL, 307 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo from Dean Quinn collection. Dean Quinn provided this clipping of the L.R. Chelf post office, from Old Knifley. The store stood until the coming of Corps of Engineers and the big land grab which took out much of Old Knifley, including this store, then operated by Marshall Chelf, son of L.R. Chelf. The clipping is part of the Adair County Public Library's Genealogy Department folder, "Community - Knifley," which is one of a file cabinet full of folders on the communities of Adair County. Inside, the store was always spic and span, orderly, meticulously kept. There were seats and nail kegs for gatherings. Mom, Audrey Chelf Waggener, remembers that sometimes it was standing room only. And she remembered one old man who came in and found "his seat" taken. He walked back out on the plank porch, quietly, and started gazing at the sky, as if to spot an airplane. When the crowd inside noticed, their curiosity got the better of them, and they came out to get a glimpse of the rare sight. While their eyes were toward the heavens, the old man edged to the back of the crowd, went back in the store, and claimed "his" rightful seat.
