Silent City 2013: Joseph Flowers as Woodruff Flowers, M.D.

2013-10-29 - Columbia Cemetery, 315 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. The finale of the 2013 Silent City presentations took place on the north side of the cemetery, overlooking Campbellsville Street. Joseph Flowers as his grandfather - "Granddoc" - Dr. Woodruff Flowers, a most beloved family physican from Adair County's past, with Adair County Genealogical Librarian Ernestine Bennett and Lash Davenport, who appears in the opening scene receiving a shot from Dr. Flowers. Dr. Flowers' black bag is open on his and Berenice Rickman Flowers headstone, and portraits of the grand couple are on the left, lighted by a coal oil lamp of the era. People still living will remember having their tonsils taken out at Dr. Flowers' office, as Joseph Flowers recalled, as casually as getting a haircut today. Little known though, was the memory of that Dr. Flowers actually performed that surgery on house calls. The performance had be anticipated for years; this year it become a reality and the audience, expecting a stellar performance, got more. The performance captured the historical highlights of Dr. Flowers' professional life and that of his equally beloved wife, Berenice Rickman Flowers, but the humanity which endeared the couple to Adair Countians in a way rarely, if ever, equalled.
