A real sign of fall: The King Pumpkins at White Place

2013-09-25 - 6019 Russell Springs Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Dana King.
There are pumpkins, cushaws, gourds, and Indian Corn
in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors at Dana King's roadside market in her parents', Don and Lois White's home at 6019 Russell Springs Road (Google Map/Directions), Columbia, KY. It's the fourth year the family has grown pumpkins for sale. One very popular - and in short supply, pumpkin - is the red, stackable pumpkins on the chair, called, obviously after one thinks a minute, "Cinderellas." These are quite popular this year. The big pumpkins on the right, "Spartans," are more the traditional jack-o-lantern carving pumpkins for Halloween. There are also pie pumpkins, which more and more people are using as a vegetable or as edible cookware. The roadside market is open most of the time, Dana King says, and will continue through October 31, 2013, she said. If you want to make sure on market open times, call ahead, 270-634-2608.
