West Side Public Square, Columbia, KY (1961)

2013-09-21 - Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo from the collection of Ann Curtis.
The West Side of the Square, 1961 on a day the Adair County Marching Band paraded around the Square in Columbia. "Majorettes, left to right: Laverne Woody, Marsha Brock Walker (drum major), Betty Yates, Becky Parsons and 'me.' Not sure who's behind Marsha. I believe that's Junior Feese on trombone," Ann Curtis writes. The businesses seen from left at that time were Russell & Co., Delmer Upchurch, proprietor, and upstairs, the Adair County Board of Education; Columbia General Appliance, Gaspard & Evelyn Brockman, owners; the Bank of Columbia; Maupin Barber Shop, with the traditional barber pole; Ed's Kentucky Auto Store, Ed Williams, proprietor; G & M Grill, (Dick Morris era?), with Sealtest Ice Cream sign; the Columbian Theatre, Charles & Yvonne Marshall, owners; Marshall's Shoe Store, J.C. and Sarah Marshall, owners and upstairs, the Farmers Home Administration, John Shelley, Supervisor; and Columbia 5 & 10, Paul Marshall, owner. Can't make out all the names. "Me" is the owner of the photograph, Ann Heskamp Curtis. Noteworthy is a parking pattern which needs reconsideration, with parking around the courthouse, as the community thinks about adopting a shopper and visitor friendlier Downtown. Perhaps, as a foil to speeding, angled parking around the courthouse as practiced before the parallel parking of this era. Corrections, comments, and identifications are welcome.
