Epicurean Kentuckian: A very simple repast

2013-09-10 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Simple fare. A peasant supper. A mostly Adair County grown meal with the best beans, potatoes, tomatoes, and apples we've ever eaten. That was a favorite saying of Dad's - "The Best I've ever eaten," but this was. The beans were from Tucker's Station, and warmed over. We think we got the potatoes from the Adair Farmers Market, and they were warmed over, too, and better the second day than the first. The apples are from Prof. Jeff Scott's orchard, and made a dandy dessert over the buttered and toasted biscuits.. The red tomatoes, the red onion, and the cucumbers are from a local farmers market, but we don't remember which one. We like the old fashion ones, best. The neon green tomatoes are wonderful Aunt Ruby's German tomatoes, green when ripe. They've become our favorite. They come from Darrell Bunnell's Coview Farm, at Coburg. The butter is real cow butter, but it and the cheese beside it are from the supermarket, probably from Wisconsin, but would have been better manufactured with Adair County produced milk. And the cauliflower - good as the crudites were, was from off. The only thing missing was mixed greens and pot licker and some of Mema's cornbread. Still - the best we ever ate. - EW
