New Street level signs combine aesthetics, utility

2013-08-24 - 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo from concept by Sherman-Barnhart-Carter, Architects. Themed signage is part of the long range plan included in the Landscape Masterplan for the Adair County School's Campus. The general design above, was included in a drawing presented to the Adair County School Board by Gabe Jones, of the architectural firm Sherman-Barnhart-Carter, Lexington, KY. Superintendent Alan Reed said that the signs on the left will be located in front of individual buildings and the signs on the right will be at Main Entrances. However, he said, "We will make improvements. We'll make the signs easier to read by using a white background with black letters. We'll include the Street Number of the Buildings as the largest graphic on each sign. These will coordinate with the big letters on the buildings, so that visitors - and especially first responders will be able to find campus locations easily." All the signs will be perpendicular to the buildings they designate, so they can be seen by traffic going in either direction. "And," Superintendent Reed said, "we'll coordinate with Adair County 911 and professional drivers before we erect any signs." He said he's hoping that the district's signage will be emulated by other business and institutions in the area, and if it should draw national and international attention the way the school's Mobile Gifted and Talented Classroom has done, that will only be a bonus. - EW
