Syncronized study at the Columbia City Council

2013-06-26 - City Hall, 116 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Everyone was at the same task, if not on the same page as Councillors, from left, Dr. Ronald Rogers, Charles Grimsley, and June Parson, and City Clerk Sonya Biggs, were studying documents ten minutes into the the special called meeting of Columbia City Council, which began at 5pmCT, Tuesday, June 25, 2013. The meeting was marked by spirited deliberations which lasted 45 minutes with tough decisions made on "revenue enhancements" (can't call the gas department changes a "rate" increase, Councillor Rogers insisted) for the city sanitation and gas departments, and the Mayor's suggested pay increase for City employees was dropped from the 2013-2014 budget by a vote of 6-0, with the Council promising that the issue would be revisited at quarterly reviews of the budget in September and December 2013. The council argued cost/benefits of the embryonic recycling program, and faced the sobering realization that the city gas department's "profits," championed by Councillor Robert Flowers, will be far from an at times projected $250,000; that, even with its own revenue enhancements is projected to be in the $23,000 range.
