Historic LaRue Co., KY: Benningfield's, Mt. Sherman, KY

2013-05-06 - Main Street, KY 61, Mt. Sherman, KY - Photo from the collection of Larry Smith. The cars tell the story, Larry Smith says, "they're 1956 or about, but the photo is marked 1958 on the back, so I'll go with that. Before there was a Big K, before they even heard of Walmart east of the Mississippi, there was "Clyde's" - Clyde Benningfield's in Mt. Sherman, KY - where everything was available in one place. The "mall", located on the East Side of KY 61, had the post office, a barber shop, and, inside the vast emporium every manner of merchandise any responsible person would want, much less need. Clyde's was the fashion setter, as trendy as New York, London or Paris - they had the First Levi's in this region, as high a fashion item, today, as anyone could want. I was saddened to see, on a recent trip to Louisville that the structure is all gone today. It was a time when Mt. Sherman was a mercantile center, serving not only South LaRue, but the northern reaches of Green County, some of Taylor, and even nearby Hart County. Adair Countians remember Mt. Sherman as a stopping point for gas and take out food. One did not have to pause in metropolitan Summersville or starve or run out of gas before making it to Buffalo, KY, everything was right there, if not at Clyde's at other stores along the shady pull off that Mt. Sherman remains today. Thanks to everyone who listens to The Big Dawg, 99.9, in the Mt. Sherman area, from our transmitter high over Little Cake, Adair County, KY. This picture is for you - with hopes you'll send comments to ColumbiaMagazine.com or to me, at, this morning, at The WAVE, FM 92.7, at 270-384-7979. - Larry Smith Rickie Williams has identified the car on the left as a 1956 Ford Fairlane 2dr sedan; and the car on the right as a 1956 Dodge Royal Lancer 4dr sedan.
