Scenic Adair Co., KY: Russell Creek Hills, KY 80 at Conover Road

2013-04-19 - KY 80, East of Columbia, West of Russell Springs, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. The Russell Springs Highway at the KY 80 Bridge over Upper Russell Creek is as scenic as it still is busy. Redbud, above, is at its peak at this point, and for those who have time and are careful to watch the traffic, there is a treasure trove of trillium on either side of the Columbia/WAVE 92.7 FM hillside - in big patches. The road off the far side of the bridge, to the left in the photo, is Conover Road. For those who might not already know, the Russell Creek is flowing South at this bridge - to the right in the photo as one heads toward The County, where might Russell Creek originates. Travelling East from Columbia, the Creek is flowing North, to one's left, at the Columbia Bridge. According to local legend, which may or may not be fact, the Creek is 99 miles long as it flows from Russell to Adair, the Green County, where it meets Green River just north of US 68/KY 70 West of Greensburg. They used to tell us that "rivers" have to be 100 miles long, and that's why the broad, deep Russell Creek is a creek and not a river. - EW
