A Worthwhile Upgrade

2013-04-15 - Photo by Pen. When the boys started playing the occasional game of chess, they found that our wooden travel set--an inexpensive souvenir from their uncle's trips--wasn't really comfortable for seriously learning the game. The slightest bump sent the light pieces scattering. Plastic and cardboard chess sets are available for $8 and less at discount stores, but they have similar problems. As with so many consumer goods these days, spending a little more can make the difference between "looks like it would work" and "is genuinely enjoyable to play." Pictured is the Executive Tournament Chess Kit available from sellers on Amazon for around $30. It includes a roll-up vinyl playing mat and large, triple-weighted, traditional Staunton pieces, plus a zip-up carrying case for trips to the park.
