Feeding Lucy

2013-01-21 - Photo by Linda Waggener.
Gertrude Browning feeds her growing baby Lucy a bottle of water as she weans her off bottle feeding. Mrs. Browning and her daughter Vicky Pike have raised the little orphan until she is now fat and sassy and ready to join the family of calves eating regular feed. Some of them are robust enough that they can pick up a bag of feed and take off with it. Lucy is not the first orphan they've helped get a start. They point to the grown up Kenny Buck, about to celebrate his tenth birthday, who needed help as a baby. They were preparing their animals for the upcoming drop in temperatures on their farm outside Columbia and were kind enough to take a short break from chores for a picture. The calves called them back to work pretty quickly. -- LW
