Epicurean Kentuckian: It doesn't get any better

2012-10-17 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
One of the things I'm so thankful for is the Tuesday afternoon Farmers Market
. My schedule doesn't let me get to there in the mornings, but when I read there were old fashioned pears there, it was a must visit. Got these from Barbara and Wayne Armitage, as well as the carrots and peanuts. The tomatoes were grown by Mr. and Mrs. Ken Thiery, and those luscious Jonathan, full of fall taste, art, and philosophy, are from Jeff and Henrietta Scott's Antioch Orchard. The pears I went for were perfect. Sweet and firm - but not scrunchy. They came with a lovely provenance, a little romance. When Wayne Armitage brought his demure young bride to Adair County, looking for a place to settle, she told him, on first seeing the pear tree, "You have to buy me that pear tree." He did, and the house came with it. Now the pear is paying for the house. Isn't that a great happy ever after? - Linda
