It was successful apple pressing

2012-10-16 - Mt. Carmel, Adair Co., KY - Photo by Phillip Cox. It was a succesful pressing: 15 gallons. We have pressed nearly 20 gallons this year and the trees are still chocked full! Veteran cider maker and cider mill collector Sam Pelly (95) is grinding the mix of winesap and old time crimson red. Mrs. Pelly (90) is priming the grinder with a mallet, which has a secondary use of keeping Sam on the job. Edgar Holmes (92) is overseeing the operation. Margaret Perkins (84) is watching Buck Perkins (92) prepare to squeeze the juice from the apples produced from the trees the Perkins set out in 1964, of which I am now the benefactor. Thanks Margaret and Buck. Youngster Dalton Coomer (67) is in the background trying to benefit from an elder experience. That group looks so vitalized they might have been out sparking in the 40 ford you see in the background. - Richard Robertson Related photo: Apple Cider Making at Mt. Carmel
