Milemarker 9: Now a monument to an unthinkable tragedy

2012-09-08 - Knifley Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Yesterday afternoon, September 7, 2012 this beautiful, beckoning stretch of Knifley Road - KY 551 - held only a few reminders of the unthinkable tragedy of the evening before. Tire marks a few yards south of the north looking view gave a hint of the path of the vehicle. In the scant litter along the way there were items which may or may not have come from the vehicle - the red Nike jersey in the center of the photo, bottles, wrappers and other tiny debris - but the cautioning traffic barrels, the gaping hole in guardrail, a detached pickup bumper, the path the careening vehicle made in the woods unmistakably bring a saddest story all too vividly to mind. The scene is just south of Mile Marker 9. Prayers for the survivors, for the family of the deceased driver, and for their school are being raised today throughout the region.
