Scenic Adair Co., KY: A new garden

2012-06-28 - 300 Merchant Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Even with competition from the showy petunias, marigolds, and coxcombs, a single yellow squash plant stands out above the rest in the stone walled flower bed along the side of Haven Mission Independent Church, which is being methodically transformed by Pastor Jim Williams, his congregation, and some prominent backers who see a hidden potential in the little church. As I watch the deliberate pace of the progress at the little church, I can't help but remember one of the most beautiful stories Byron Crawford ever wrote, about the efforts of one man, Willis Pedigo, to establish a Church of Christ on North Main Street in Edmonton, KY. Mr. Pedigo was so humble he would only let the famed columnist write the story without his name. He was referred to as "the man." Fortunately, Pastor Williams is not so shy, and enjoys the increasing attention to the little church on Merchant Street, which grew out of a tiny Production Credit Association office once there. The flowers are one more attraction riveting its image into memories and sights of Downtown Columbia. -EW
