Scenic Adair Co., KY: First Church of the Nazarene 2012-06-28 - 1200 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. It happened so quickly it may have escaped notice: The Steeple at the Columbia First Church of the Nazarene was removed, renovated, and replaced this past week by Campbellsville Industries, the steeple people. The steeple is one of Columbia's most familiar landmarks, whether those who have the image inbedded in their subconscious know the name of the church or not. On the Louie B. Nunn Parkway and for the tens of thousands who visit the Lindsey Wilson Sports Park it stands out on a very pleasing prominence. This view is a bit retro, an homage to the years the steeple tilted backward. It no longer does, but the angle - up close and personal - may make it seem to do so. As incredibly attractive as the church campus is from a distance, it's even more pleasing on the grounds - a park like setting with spectacular vistas, reassuring lights in the distance, and small, seldom noticed details like the grand Twin Oak picnic area. On Wednesday evening, prayer meeting night, friendly gatherings awaiting the start of services seemed especially appreciative of the blessings of a cooling evening, enjoying the gentle breezes which always cool the tops of hills in Adair County. -EW.
