Epicurean Kentuckian: Blueberry contraband makes it home

2012-06-23 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
These made it through: Most of the time, no matter how big the load of Blueberries we buy, they never make it home to fulfill the "this-is-enough-to-last-all-year" plans when a blueberry run is made. This year, Mom and I were late to the Blueberry Festival, and the only blueberries we could find were these, in pint containers. To make sure they were not eaten on the way, we locked them away. They made it - all the way to the freezer. They're delightful any way they're used. This is one of the simplest: Just freeze and eat them like those little overpriced ice cream bb's. There's none of the mess of popsicles, and nutritionists say they are good for us. Maybe if somebody put twenty frozen blueberries in a Pez style dispenser and charged $2.95 for them and gave them a catchy name, they'd be as popular as they should be. By the way, Adair County's treasure of information, Maury Lewis, does the same with grapes: freeze them and eats them ice cold. The moral of the story, though is to get to the Blueberry Festival early, or better yet, do as Mary Keltner of Gradyville does, and make a pre-festival visit right to one of the farms.- - Linda
