Wildflowers of KY: Milkweed Bouquet on Sullivan Road

2012-06-21 - Sullivan Road, District 3, Adair Co., KY - Photo by Linda Waggener. South Adair County's Sullivan Road is beautiful and secluded. It's one of Adair County's best kept secrets. It runs south off Melson Ridge Road, at a point east of Inroad, West of Cundiff, the capital of Melson Ridge. This scene along the right of way captures attention with an unmistakable message: Summer is really here. Drought or no drought, the narrow, winding, out-of-the-way wayside is stunning. Orange milkweed - Butterfly Weed - will be as beautiful this year as ever. And these - not dominant in numbers - were the alpha blooms commanding the most attention, though the floral elements, including the giant Queen Ann's Lace made this natural arrangement so indelibly memorable. Maybe, the best things in life really are free; maybe the best times are unplanned, unexpected. Especially when shared with another who understands. - LW For more on the milkweed plant, see Billy Joe Fudge's Kentucky Color: Zebra Swallowtail and Butterfly Weed June is a great time to slowly drive back country lanes and byways to see colorful milkweed and all the butterflies its beautiful flower attracts.
