Scenic Adair Co., KY: A small, family sized patch of burley

2012-06-20 - Two miles east of Inroad - Photo by Ed Waggener.
There's something comforting to old time Adair Countians at the sight of a neat, small family size field of burley tobacco about like this one along Melson Ridge Road, looking west from Burchett Cemetery Road. Only ankle high now, surviving a mean drought which already has thirsty, struggling corn crops twisting, the scene brings back memories of anxious times for many a tobacco farmer in the summer when families wondered whether this year's crop, often providing most of the year's cash crop, would make it. In almost every case, by dint of loving care, nick of time showers, and a plant which comes back from the most inhospitable treatment to thrive, there would always be Christmas, store accounts would be settled, tuition could be paid, an annual mortgage obligation would be met and a note rolled over, and for some, a pint or two from the sale. Probably no worry, here, now; this crop looked quite strong, despite the withering heat, despite the long drought. -CM
