Scenic Adair Co., KY: The Joys of Lurking, Downtown

2012-06-15 - Fountain, Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
One learns so much, listening and lurking, Downtown. These two whippersnapper youngsters, Gerald Doss, left and the red headed lad on the right, Dave Wells, were sharing memories of the olden days at the Fountain Plaza, in Downtown Columbia, while enjoying the Mediterranean breeze there Thursday morning. They told of marvelous old time things: Of Jasper Doss' kerosene ice box, of the the ice houses where, in the Ice Ages many, many decades ago, folks in Jasper Doss' Pellyton neighborhood would harvest froze-over Green River Ice and store it for summer; and of memorabilia which can cause much damned astonishment when shown to today's teeny boppers - those born as late as the 1960's: A square card with numbers on it, an Ice Card which let the iceman know how much ice to bring. They didn't let me talk, but allowed me to lurk and listen at no charge. It was one of the bonuses of living and being in Downtown Columbia, where the best story telling pits just happen. Who knows, they may have known what they were talking about. Even if whoever heard of the like . . . a kerosene refrigerator!!! And an Iceman. We had one here, once upon a time - an Iceman. A wonderful man: James Wilkerson. Even if he couldn't rap a lick. - Ed Waggener, too young at 172 to really appreciate the days told of.
