Churches of Adair Co., KY: Santa Fee Baptist, from afar

2012-04-25 - Burkesville Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
The historic Santa Fee Baptist Church, on Burkesville Road (now in the process of being renamed Wheeler Hill Road), is an inspiring sight from any direction, but nowhere more so than from afar midway up Jobe Hill on Lasley Road; and in no season more than these shades of deep green days of Spring. The church has been home to many distinguished Adair Countians, and was once visited by the mother of Muhammad Ali - then Cassius Clay who descended from the Gradys of Santa Fee and Gradyville, KY. The road by the side of the church leads to a beautifully preserved Rosenwald School, out of sight in this photo. The pavement was once part of Jones Chapel Road, but now new Jones Chapel Road can be seen by the lower orange and white traffic barrel. Jones Chapel Road now enters old Burkesville Road soon to be Wheeler Hill Road exactly opposite Hughes Road. The traffic barrel highest on the page is on new KY 61 S, the Chattanooga Highway.
