Unity is Strength: Playing African Drums

2012-04-24 - ACES, 870 Indian DR, Columbia, Ky - Photo By Debbie Cowan.
Playing djembe drums Nicole Hodge, Stephanie Rozack, Taylor Calhoun, Mr. Gregory Acker, Kenneth Parsley, and Austin are playing the djembe draums. Early Monday morning of March 26, 2012, Adair County Elementary students helped Gregory Ackes, the visiting artist, unpack a week of fun and learning. The scene is from the "Unity in Strength" week at Adair County Elementary students led Gregory Acker. Mr. Acker was inspired by the arts and culture of West Africa after living there as a Peace Corps volunteer, and later studying with master drummer Abraham Adzenyah of Ghana. Gregory Acker has devoted himself to making African-style instruments and teaching music and related West African arts. -Paula Bault
