Mike Watson sends this photo of a scene sure to stir warm memories. "This was a full-on photo of the First National Bank, with a slice of Jeffries Hardware on the left and a hint of Nell's 5 and 10 Variety on the right," he writes. The bank is now the First and Farmers National Bank and its facade now includes the building on the right. Many consider the First National Bank building in this era the most handsome building ever on the perimeter of the Square. Jeffries Hardware, also a stately building, was a beehive of activity, and packed wonderous varieties of goods into what is, by today's standards, a small building. And Nell's 5 & 10 Variety was as much a part of growing up in Columbia as skinny dipping in the Sulphur Hole in Russell Creek, Boy Scouts and the Baptist BTU, and daily promenades around the magical Columbia Public Square.
