Scenic Adair Co., KY: Vinca lined roadway

2012-03-13 - Old Glensfork Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
Spring rains gave Glens Fork Creek riffles a bit more rush, and also brought out a mass of vinca blooms along the bank. The Old Glensfork Road wayside scene is across from the Henry Garnett farm on one of Adair County's prettiest shortcuts. Taking a right at Tupman's (shrinking) Pond, just south of "Tutman" Road - that's what the sign says. There's hardly any difference in the mileage to Glens Fork/Glensfork/Glenville/Village of Hardscratch either way, but it's a slower route. As for Tupman's Pond, the once half-acre lake, created by a cloudburst which caused the Gradyville Flood of June 7, 1907, is now just a small fraction of its mid-1900's size. And the vinca? - sometimes called myrtle: It's considered an invasive plant by some, according to the Vinca entry in Wikipedia, but it also is considered a medicinal plant, the article says, but either way, a beautiful spring plant. -Ed Waggener
