Birds of Kentucky: Counted as 3 Turkey Vultures

These three guys got counted for the Great Backyard Bird Count as Turkey Vultures: Enlarged, their featherless heads show the red of a Turkey Vulture rather than the grayish-black of Black Vultures. Black Vultures tend to be more dominant in the South. Indeed lately, spotters in Adair County say they are seeing more and more black vultures. Both birds are majestic in flight, though the black vulture has a more hawk like appearance, and flaps more frequently than the graceful soarer turkey vulture cousins do. The birds were strategically perched above the intersection of Pelham Branch Road and the Adair County Veterans Memorial Bypass. They've been counted in the Great Backyard Bird Count, now underway, February 17-20, 2012.
